What Is Descript?

Descript is a video and audio editing platform that takes a completely different approach: instead of editing a waveform or a timeline, you edit a transcript. Delete words from the transcript and the corresponding audio/video is deleted. Cut and paste text and the media moves with it.

Founded in 2017 and backed by Andreessen Horowitz, Descript has grown to hundreds of thousands of users who create podcasts, YouTube videos, course content, and social clips without ever touching a traditional editing timeline.

Who Is Descript For?

Descript is built for:

  • Podcasters who want to edit episodes without being audio engineers
  • YouTubers creating talking-head and screen-recorded content
  • Course creators producing video lessons at scale
  • Social media creators repurposing long-form content into clips
  • Marketers creating video content without a production team

It's not ideal for:

  • Cinematic film editing (Final Cut Pro, Premiere are better for complex cuts)
  • Music production (different tool category entirely)
  • Live streaming (OBS, StreamYard handle this)

Core Features

Transcript-Based Editing

The signature Descript experience: your video or audio is transcribed automatically when you upload it. The transcript appears as text on the right side of the screen, synced with the media timeline on the left.

To edit: select words in the transcript and delete them. The corresponding audio/video is instantly removed. To cut a section: select the text you want removed and press delete. Done.

For podcasters accustomed to scrubbing through waveforms to find the "um" they want to cut, this is a revelation. Find it in the text, delete it in the text. Done in 2 seconds instead of 30.

Filler Word Removal

Descript identifies filler words (um, uh, like, you know, literally) across your entire transcript with one click. You review the list, check/uncheck which instances to remove, and apply. All selected fillers are cut from the audio/video simultaneously.

A typical 45-minute podcast interview has 200-400 filler words. Removing them manually in a traditional editor takes 1-2 hours. In Descript, it takes 5 minutes.

AI Overdub (Voice Cloning)

Record a voice sample (5+ minutes of you speaking), and Descript creates a voice clone. When you make corrections — you misspoke a word, want to add a sentence — instead of re-recording, you type what you want said and Descript generates your voice saying it.

This is most useful for:

  • Correcting mistakes without setting up a microphone again
  • Adding introductory sentences to old recordings
  • Updating course content where one line has changed

The quality is very good for corrections of a few words to a sentence. Longer generated passages sound slightly synthetic but are improving rapidly.

Compositions and Social Clips

Descript's Compositions feature creates short clips for social media. Select a section of your podcast or video, choose a template (square, vertical, horizontal), add animated captions, and export as a social-ready clip.

Repurposing a 60-minute podcast into 5 social clips used to take a video editor 3-4 hours. In Descript, one person with no video editing background can do it in 45 minutes.

Screen Recording

Descript includes a screen recorder that captures your screen and webcam, then immediately loads into the editor for transcript-based editing. For course creators and anyone making tutorial content, this integrates the entire capture-to-edit workflow in one tool.

Descript Pricing

| Plan | Price | Transcription | Filler Words | Overdub | |------|-------|---------------|--------------|---------| | Free | $0 | 1 hour/month | No | No | | Hobbyist | $12/month | 10 hours/month | Yes | Yes | | Creator | $24/month | 30 hours/month | Yes | Yes | | Business | $40/month | Unlimited | Yes | Yes |

Annual pricing saves ~20%: Creator drops to $20/month.

The free plan's 1 hour of transcription per month covers occasional users. Hobbyist at $12/month is the right level for a weekly podcast.

Real Time Savings

Based on actual creator workflows, Descript saves:

Podcasters (60-min episode, 2x/month):

  • Traditional editing: 3-4 hours/episode
  • Descript editing: 45-90 minutes/episode
  • Monthly savings: 3-6 hours

YouTubers (15-min video, 4x/month):

  • Traditional editing: 2-3 hours/video
  • Descript editing: 45-60 minutes/video
  • Monthly savings: 5-8 hours

Course creators (building a new course):

  • Recording 5 hours of lessons → editing in Descript → exporting: 3 days instead of 2 weeks

Descript vs. Adobe Premiere Pro

Premiere is more powerful for complex, multi-camera, cinematic productions. Descript is faster for the content creation use case (talking head, podcast, screen recording).

A YouTuber doing weekly vlogs or tutorials doesn't need Premiere's power and pays for it in learning curve. Descript covers 90% of their editing needs with 10% of the effort.

Verdict

Descript earns a 4.7/5 for content creators.

The transcript-based editing model is genuinely better than timeline editing for speech-based content. Filler word removal is a superpower. The AI overdub is useful for corrections. The social clips feature makes repurposing viable for one-person operations.

If you produce any kind of talking content — podcast, YouTube, course — the free trial will show you within 30 minutes whether this changes how you work. For most content creators, it does.
